The Seiko Elnix is an interesting genre of watch and interesting technology for its day.  This is a fundamentally a mechanical movement all be it powered by a battery instead of a mainspring. The watch gets its regulation from a conventional balance wheel so there is no quartz in sight just a small circuit board to power the coil which is sandwiched between the two wheels that make up the balance wheel that have magnets on them polar opposite to the coil.  The interesting thing is the whole thing runs backwards in that the balance powers the pallet fork to the escape wheel to drive the train of wheels.  As a hobbyist repairer like me I find these fascinating and have made a video on restoring one of these here:

The cool thing is you get a mechanical ticking noise from the watch and like an automatic you get a nice smooth tick. The advantage at the time was due to it having a battery you can take it off for a week and come back and it’s still telling the time!

I have stripped this one down and inspected it all before cleaning and servicing the movement.  It’s now fully regulated and keeping superb time, take a look at the video on the timegrapher.

Watch has had a new glass and gaskets to the glass, case back and crown.  I have fitted a new fine mesh strap with safety clasp which I think suits the watch really well.
